Colonia del Sacramento will be host to the final event of a major reggae music contest in Latin America. On the 14th and 15th of April, 11 selected bands from Chile, Argentina and Uruguay will perform at the BIT Center as part of the Suma Reggae Festival.
This event will also be the completion of the Rototom Reggae Contest Latino. Therefore, the winning band will be able to take part in Rototom Sunsplash 2012, a European reggae festival, in Benicassim, Spain.
Apart from the bands that are competing, there is another category for “Singjays”, a particular and quite unknown practice among the genre. Each day a Jamaican band will close the show.
The event is for free, and instead of paying a ticket you can take a school utensil or a warm clothing item to donate.
Nathalie Hernández Clavijo provides news and information about Colonia as part of the Youth Correspondents Program, created by the United States Embassy in Uruguay.
